Living traditions: Tai Chi

Tai chi (or taiji) is an exercise in which the participant moves in slow, deliberate and fluid motions. It has been shown to lower blood pressure, alleviate back and knee pain, and benefit the cardiovascular system.

Although it is practiced today for relaxation, it was originally a marital art. At the most fundamental level, tai chi teaches us how to move from the core, coordinating our breathing muscles for the most efficient movement.

As an exercise, tai chi is suitable for all levels of fitness. It can be as difficult or easy as you want to make it. Some of the benefits include an increased sense of body awareness, balance, and inner calm.
